President's Report

From the President's Desk

Don Precour, 2017 MMLA President
Fifth Third Bank

It is spring time and the selling season is off and running! I am writing to remind all of you as members to take advantage of your membership on the various events coming up over the next few months. This is a great time to sign up and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the various speakers, such as Bill Cosgrove, CMB (Union Home Mortgage CEO & Owner). He will be speaking on May 10th at Sunnybrook Golf Club in the morning. In addition, we are offering the Mid-Chapter luncheon on May 17th with Audre Hutson (Founder and President of Conquest Health & Fitness Foundation) to learn how a professional athlete became a successful businessman.   We have some fun in meeting old friends and establishing new ones by attending the SE chapter golf outing on June 8th and the West Chapter Golf outing on June 12th. And last but not least, the ANNUAL LENDING CONFERNCE July 30 – August 1 at Soaring Eagle Resort in Mt. Pleasant!

There are a lot of events going on for the next two months so I encourage you to take the time to attend as many of these events and utilize the benefits of your MMLA membership. You can always refer to the MMLA Events Calendar for more details on each event and all the rest of the events for the year!

Please contact me or Joanne Misuraca if you have any questions or need anything from the MMLA. I look forward to seeing you out in the golf events or the summer conference this year!

Proposed Amendments to the Mortgage Lending Practices Act

The Act, also known as the Anti-Redlining Act of 1977 would be amended to update the Mortgage Lending Practices Act. The current minimum mortgage amount that could be imposed by a lender would be increased from $10,000 to $25,000, and for a home improvement loan from $1,000 to $2,500. Additionally, the bill would require the DIFS Director to increase the minimum mortgage and home improvement amounts to reflect any subsequent annual increase in the “Detroit Consumer Price Index”. The bill would delete subsections 9 and 10 of Section 2, which require mortgage lenders to make available at the lender’s principal and branch offices a pamphlet or document explaining the lender’s criteria for the approval or denial of a loan application.

Allan Daniels, Don Calcaterra and I will be meeting with the DIFS Director, Patrick McFarlane, and his staff on June 13th. Director McFarlane has expressed concerns about proposed amendments in the bill, which would increase the allowable minimum mortgage amount from $10,000 to $25,000, and allowable minimum home improvement loan amount from $1,000 to $2,500. We would have preferred an earlier meeting on the bill, but the Director has a busy schedule.

Senator Booher, Chair of the Senate Banking Committee has agreed to introduce the bill.

Membership and PR Committee

The MMLA Membership & PR Committee
Trinity Lancione, Chairperson
MMLA Communications and Events Manager

Membership and PR Committee has been working hard towards setting up the Rising Star Awards. This year’s recipients were honored at the Rising Star Reception on May 2nd. At Amnesia Nightclub in Motor City Casino.  The event was great, with nearly 100 people in attendance. They enjoyed appetizers, cocktails and, of course, the award presentations. All recipients gave a thank you and added what they love about the mortgage industry. It was inspiring to see so many young professionals excited about our industry and being part of the MMLA!! Go to the MMLA Facebook page to see all the pics from the evening.

The Committee is also very excited at all of the new initiatives that have been in the works and can’t wait to share them with all of you, as they come to fruition.

If you would like to participate on this committee, please contact me at trinity@mmla.net.  We meet monthly via conference call - not too much of your time will be needed but it will be very much appreciated!!

MMLA Working Group Calls

MMLA Risk Management and Compliance Working Group

Alice Alvey, Master CMB
Indecomm Mortgage U

The working groups have come together to form one impressive group of experts. Now that the bulk of the Dodd Frank Act is  implemented, the group members have found that risk management in underwriting is overlapping regularly with compliance needs. The managers of each area are learning from each other and adding more value to the attendees as a whole.

This is a great time to join the Working Group monthly call. The forum gives each participant a chance to ask questions and provide feedback on day to day as well as complex compliance, operational and underwriting challenges. The group reviews the latest agency hot buttons and trends unique to the Michigan market. The experts on the call come from all areas of mortgage banking including lenders, bankers, credit unions, legal and quality control.

Indecomm – Mortgage U is proud to serve as the host of the event. Questions can be submitted to the group in advance by emailing Denise Kowalski at: denise.kowalski@indecomm.net.

To join the group, simply contact Joanne Misuraca by phone or email. She will provide the invitation so you can save the date and time on your calendar.  This is an opportunity worth setting as a priority every month. The one hour investment, may save you thousands in an operational improvement or required regulation change.

CMB Society News

Michigan CMB Society Update!
Dan Sugg, CMB
Certified Mortgage Bankers Society Chairperson
Michigan First Credit Union

Remember when refi’s were everywhere? Seems like so long ago, oh wait it was just like November? Regardless of your political leanings, we can all agree that the change that happened at the polls in November and in DC in January is reshaping the mortgage industry with almost the same furiousness that we witnessed in 2009. It isn’t a secret that CMB’s really gravitate to political advocacy and this year shaping up to not disappoint us! I have already booked my ticket for the National Advocacy Conference 2017 and would ask you to think about joining me and my fellow CMB members in DC for June 19-20 to be part of the voice of reason for our industry. I promise that you will leave this event wiser and more empowered than you can imagine. If you only attend one event on a national level and are interested in shaping the future of your career, the National Advocacy Conference 2017 is it.

The Michigan CMB society is planning a meet and greet social hour for anyone that wants to learn about what it means to be a Certified Mortgage Banker. Think drinks with friends - there, now we have your attention! Please be on the lookout for your invite for a June 28th event in Royal Oak - as details are still forming.  Whom I kidding, Jen Plagens just suggested this idea and I’m literally trying to pick the day that works, Ha-ha all kidding aside this will be an informal reason to share a libation and learn more about the CMB designation.

And as always if you have question about the process to becoming a CMB, please contact me at dsugg@michiganfirst.com or reach out to any of the other CMB’s in Michigan.
