President's Report

From the President's Desk

By:  Jim Wickham CMB, 2018 MMLA President
Union Home Mortgage Company

Watch Jim's President's speech here:

I want to first compliment and thank Don Precour. His effort, perspective, and enthusiasm has made us a better association – job well done.

I want to also extend my gratitude for the incoming board. Don, Todd Potter, and I have already had a very productive year together, very quickly finding a good balance with each other - leveraging individual strengths while hopefully hiding weaknesses. I welcome Denya Macaluso to our officer’s team as 2018 Secretary Treasurer. Welcome back to Pava Leyrer, all her years serving the broker association has been great perspective that makes us better. This year we also welcome Ryan Evans to the State Board. His ongoing support of the association as well as his perspective as a vendor will also make us better. Add to this group our amazing chapter Presidents with Katrina Cole, Lisa Haun, and Kirk King – we have a well-balanced team. Of course, none of this happens without Joanne Misuraca and Trinity Lancione! All with different backgrounds and expertise. All ready to put forth the time and effort needed to earn your participation in, and support of, the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association.

I want to again remind all of you that we have revised our approach to sponsorships. Historically we have asked many to sponsor events individually throughout the course of the year. It is a daunting task for those putting the events together, and it is not that efficient for many of you who routinely support our events. We have come up with several sponsorship options that cover several events, combined with either state or chapter sponsorships. We have a simple request, make your sponsorship commitment for the year in advance! A commitment for the year that will cover all the events that you value having your company represent. The details and options on this are available at the MMLA website, we have included a few samples on how you can select the combination of events and/or chapters you wish to sponsor.

Historically, on an annual basis we elect state board members that over a few years of commitment make their way into the Presidents role. Traditionally the year one fills that chair they have a specific agenda or commitment made to influence our association. As Don stated we started a multiyear process that Marc, Don, and I were all committed to. During the past year of Don’s Presidency, we put much of the work we identified under Marc’s tenure into motion. But as most of us know and have lived, what sounds great in the conference room does not always play out in real life. With that in mind, we will spend the next 12 months focused on finishing this renovation plan started in 2016. We will get back to our traditional path with Todd Potter in 2019, by my priority for the next 12 months is to simply finish what we started!

Serving the association takes a commitment, and like most commitments requires a fair amount of both time and effort. I would like to thank my Partners at Union Home, along with my family for all their support. I would not be able to participate in our great association to this degree without that support.

Education Committee News

Education Committee Update
Audrey Acquisti, MMLA Education Consultant
MSource Training & Consulting

Happy New Year!  As we begin the New Year, changes are taking place within the Education Committee. We have decided to take a different approach to the Education Committee in 2018.  The goals of the committee are to provide timely topics regarding industry changes, hot topics, and effective content for both internal, operational, and sales staff within our industry.  The primary focus of the committee is to determine what topics would be of interest to our members and whom we feel can speak to these issues effectively.  We do our very best to provide you with quality and timely information but a small group of people cannot begin to know the needs of everyone.

Oftentimes, we feel that members choose not to join committees for fear there will be too many 'to do's' that may interfere with their primary job and they’re afraid to make a long term commitment.  For this reason, we will be changing the format of the “committee” and make the monthly calls more of a discussion group than a working committee. The 2018 Education Committee may still have a ‘core’ group of members that attend the majority of our calls but our committee meetings will be open to any member who has an idea, a recommendation for a speaker, or simply thoughts of how we could do something better.  The actual organizing and coordinating will be handled internally by Joanne, Trinity, and myself.  All members will be notified of upcoming monthly meetings and encouraged to attend.

Our next conference call will be on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at noon. We always do our best to keep the call under one hour.  Call in #:857-216-6700 pass code 599062.

We would love to have you on our call! We want your ideas and recommendations. The MMLA is ‘Your Association’ and we very much want your input.

Get the motivation and information you need to for the Spring Sales Season to take your production to the next level. Plan on arriving early to enjoy a great HOT buffet breakfast and talk to the companies in the expo area that can offer you tools and products to boost your sales.   Join more than 250 expected attendees at the 2018 Symposium!

Watch your email and check back to this site for more details about speakers and registration.

Plan on being an exhibitor at this event!!

SE Chapter News

SE Chapter President's Corner
Kirk King
SE Chapter President
Continuity Programs, Inc.

For the first few years at Continuity Programs, the MMLA provided an incredible opportunity for me to meet mortgage executives and other great service providers. I wanted to serve earlier but there was never a shortage of other priorities. At the end of 2014, the association had provided so much value; I just had to find the time. Starting out in 2015 as the Secretary and Treasurer under David Acquisti was a great place to start. The MMLA was starting to evolve under Marc Reneau’s leadership and there were so many unanswered questions. When Tom Johnston took over as President of the SE Chapter, he embraced the changes and led with a style that was nothing short of impressive. Now in 2018, it is my turn! I am truly honored to serve the MMLA for yet another year.

We will have an incredible 2018 with more exciting events and opportunities for great networking and camaraderie. With the new evolved structure, Joanne works with Trinity to help the chapters in even more ways. They make it even easier to serve and volunteer. As an organization, the committees do the heavily lifting and they are a great place to start volunteering in the MMLA. In 2018, Maureen Townson will serve as the Vice President for the SE Chapter. Paula Rosneck is serving yet another year as the Holiday Party Chair. Dawn Burdick is moving over to lead as the Social Chair. Marc Faber will be leading the charge for the Golf Outing. The ultimate servant leader, Michael Fontana, will continue to lead luncheons for yet another year. I have a lot of gratitude towards all of the volunteers and members of the MMLA, but without a doubt Michael Fontana was the gentleman that helped me join and see the true value of the MMLA. Click here for all the info on the SE Chapter Leadership Team.

Let’s all sign up for the February 8th luncheon to show our appreciation for everything Michael does and to hear from our new MMLA State President, Jim Wickham. Mark your calendar for all the 2018 Event.

Happy New Year! I wish you all the best in 2018!
