President's Report

From the President's Desk

By:  Jim Wickham CMB, 2018 MMLA President
Union Home Mortgage Company

A few hints of Spring have finally emerged, but for those of us who have lived in Michigan for many years - we know snow in March and April is probable and not just possible.

A lot of activity in the political arena that impacts our industry as of late.  We encourage all of our members to take a few minutes and review the MBA position on GSE reform (  The GSE’s impact almost every aspect of our industry and profoundly impact the daily activities of our members.  Changes in their structure and their role in our industry at large is an issue that clearly deserves all of our attention.  Maintaining the 30-year fixed rate mortgage and a level playing field for both small and large lenders are critical but many aspects of reform must be clarified.  Our voice from both the state and national level as well as from both small and large lenders matters.  Stay engaged, and follow up when you get the opportunity.

We’ve have had great success with our new corporate partnership approach.  Thank you to all the companies that supported this initiative both at the state and chapter level.  We have picked up some momentum this year with our new approach.  This is a great way to ensure your brand is recognized at all events throughout the year.  Your support and participation for the many of you who are involved is greatly appreciated.

Hope you all have a great Spring, ready for some Tiger baseball at Comerica Park!

Legislative & MORBANPAC Committee News

Legislative and MORBANPAC Committee Update

by:  Todd Potter, CMB, Chairman
Level One Bank

2018 is a year of significance in the State of Michigan as it relates to our elected officials who represent the citizens of this state and our industry, both in Washington DC and Lansing. Here is a brief look at what the voters in our state will be deciding on November 6, 2018:

  • Governor/Lt. Governor
  • Secretary of State
  • Attorney General
  • Two of the seven Michigan Supreme Court Justices Seats
  • One of the two US Senate seats (Stabenow)
  • 14 of the 14 congressional districts in the US House of Representatives
  • 38 of the 38 Michigan State Senate Seats
  • 110 of the 110 Michigan House of Representatives seats

In addition to several ballot proposals, it’s easy to see that 2018 will shape the direction and political climate of our state – so get ready for those commercials and robocalls we love to hate.

With this change comes opportunity and the MMLA has planned for this change in our legislative efforts. Many of you know that Murray Brown, MMLA’s Legislative Consultant who faithfully represented the best interests of the membership for many years, retired in 2017. Going forward, the Legislative Chair/Committee will take a collaborative approach, along with a renewed partnership with Karoub Associates, in discussing state legislative issues important to the interests of the MMLA, our membership and the consumer.

The Legislative committee held their first meeting of 2018 on March 2nd and discussed 31 different Housing-related Bills making their way through the State House and Senate. If anyone is interested in playing an active part in the Legislative Committee, we would welcome your participation. Contact me at

As always, your contribution to MORBANPAC is imperative that our voice is strong in Lansing. Click here to learn more about MORBANPAC and make your contribution today.

Mid Chapter News

The Mid Chapter Update
Lisa Haun
Mid Chapter President
Transnation Title Agency, Inc.

I am pleased to say that we began our 2018 year out strong on January 10th with a very well attended event at Lansing Brewing Company. Our guest speaker was our very own State MMLA President, Jim Wickham, CMB. Jim laid out the MMLA plans for the group and we all enjoyed hearing about the exciting year ahead.

Our second event was on February 7th. This was a joint event at Reno’s East in East Lansing with our local Women’s Council of Realtors. We hosted over 60 attendees. The focus of this event was to grow local membership and we handed out quite a few membership forms! Our local MSU Men’s Basketball Coach, the beloved Tom Izzo, hosted his radio show that evening at the venue. Several of us got great pics with the coach!

Next on the Lansing area horizon is our Power Lunch at Board of Water and Light Depot. This will take place on April 11. Dick Peffley, General Manager of BWL, will update us on the new power plant as well as other new developments at BWL. We will also hear from Bob Trezise, President & CEO of Lansing Economic Area Partnership (L.E.A.P). He will update us on new projects and developments around Greater Lansing. Click here to register today!

I am looking forward to our annual Lugnuts baseball outing at Cooley Law Stadium on June 21st and our annual joint golf outing with WCR at Royal Scot on August 23rd.

I would like to end by thanking each MMLA Mid leadership member for helping me make this year a success. I could not do it without all of you!

Southeast Chapter – Already Rocking 2018

We had a packed house on February 8th at Maggiano’s, and Mr. Wickham kept everyone in the room on their toes.  Dawn and her committee have already locked in the 1st awesome social event, so make sure you sign up for Meet your Match on March 22, at 5th Tavern.  We are making some major changes with the golf outing.  The monumental change is Marc moved the golf outing from Thursday to Friday; you know those mornings after the golf outings have been pretty rough.  With the weekend to recover, please block off June 8th for the craziest MMLA Golf Outing ever.  We are moving the golf outing to Boulder Pointe to keep it fresh.  Paula’s holiday party committee are already checking out venues.  We know the Zoo was awesome, but she wants to get more bang for the buck and keep everyone laughing all night.  Please keep opening the MMLA emails to stay connected and informed.  No one wants to miss a great time!!

Also, you may be interested to read an article I wrote that was published by the Michigan Bankers Association. Enjoy!
