President's Report

From the President's Desk

By:  Jim Wickham CMB
2018 MMLA President
Union Home Mortgage Company

Hard to believe it is May, this year is flying by.  The weather has finally improved and thankfully, in addition to flowers and trees budding, some “For Sale” signs have appeared in many yards around our great state.  Inventory has been a problem, this time around the lack thereof, but that does seem to be improving.  For us in the lending space, the lack of inventory (which leads to a lack of activity) has made for a tough first quarter.  We have seen a few folks consolidate, a few do some strategic downsizing, and a few exit the mortgage space entirely in the past few months.  When we see all this activity we recognize that this really is a tough business and having a strong personal network in your profession matters.  You never know when a period of change is upon us, staying engaged with your industry through associations like ours helps you stay informed.

There will be a fair amount of old friends with new business cards in the weeks ahead, and hopefully a fair amount of renewed interest in our association and events.  We have a full plate of legislative issues on deck as well as our summer golf outings right around the corner.  I also want to remind everyone to mark your calendar as our annual summer conference is coming up soon.  We have a great lineup of speakers already and most of the planning is well underway.  In a year like this where there is a lot of shifts strategically, perfect time to be in attendance to learn and broaden your perspective.  We certainly have a good time and fair amount of social activity, but the agenda of speakers and topics will certainly appeal to hopefully all of our membership.  I encourage each of you to participate this year, especially if you have not been in a while.  For those of you looking to go for the first time, you won’t be disappointed.   Look forward to seeing you all “Up North” at Crystal Mountain in August!

Legislative & MORBANPAC Committee News

Legislative and MORBANPAC Committee Update

by:  Todd Potter, CMB, Chairman
Level One Bank

On April 23-25th 2018, The MBA hosted the annual National Advocacy Conference in Washington DC.  Representing the best interest of our industry and both current/future homeowners in Michigan were:

Joanne Misuraca – MMLA
Denya Macaluso – MSU Federal Credit Union
Todd Potter – Level One Bank
Brent Green – Lake Michigan Credit Union
Tim Ross – Ross Mortgage
Tim Pascarella – Ross Mortgage
Gregg Christenson – Flagstar Bank
Ryan Eaton – Quicken Loans
Kim Blair – Union Home Mortgage
Ashley Lockaby – Northpoint Bank

Team Michigan held face to face discussions with representatives from: Sen. Debbie Stabenow; Sen. Gary Peters, Rep. Bill Huizenga, Rep. Mike Bishop, and Rep. Daniel Kildee.

The focus of our discussion centered around two areas:

  1. Thanking Sen. Stabenow and Sen. Peters for their support in signing SB2155 and encouraging Rep. Huizenga, Rep. Bishop and Rep. Kildee to support a companion bill in the House that would be signed into law in 2018
  2. GSE Reform – As in years past, we continued to stress the following principles: increased competition; strong regulation; taxpayer protection; equal market access for lenders of all sizes and business models; preservation of a strong public mission; and maintenance of a deep, liquid market for long-term single-family and multifamily financing options.

This annual event is an incredible professional experience.  Please reach out directly to any of the above individuals to learn more about the benefits of attending this conference.

Here in Michigan, the Legislative committee of the MMLA meets monthly with Karoub Associates and has reviewed several dozen Bills receiving testimony in both the State House and Senate.  Two worth noting this month to the MMLA Membership:

  1. SB 511-512 - Allows a new savings account to be opened, either jointly or individually, to benefit a first-time homebuyer. To qualify an individual cannot have owned a principle residence in the previous 3 years.  The account holder could receive up to 20 years of investment deductibility off the account holder’s state income tax, allowing the interest to grow tax free.  The annual deductibility thresholds are put to $5,000 for a single tax return and $10,000 for join filing.  Contributions to the account would be limited to $50,000.
  2. HB 4643 – Expands exemption from real estate transfer tax for principle residences that lost value. SEV must be less than or equal to the original to qualify.

The MMLA needs your support to properly sponsor and/or defend proposed legislation in Michigan.  With all the Bills being introduced and the change in the political landscape here in Michigan this fall, please consider a one-time donation to MORBANPAC.  A united voice is an effective voice!! As always, your contribution to MORBANPAC is imperative that our voice is strong in Lansing. Click here to learn more about MORBANPAC and make your contribution today.

Annual Lending Conference

The MMLA 2018 Lending Conference
by:  Karen Bondar, Chairperson
Arch Mortgage Insurance Co.

With only three months until the MMLA Annual Lending Conference, the event is shaping up to be one you won’t want to miss.  This year’s conference is Wednesday, August 15 – Friday, August 17 at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa.   The event will kick off with dinner outside on Wednesday followed by a campfire.

On Thursday, a great group of speakers will present information about digital marketing, an economic update, an industry update, how to sell to consumers with high tech and high touch, cybersecurity and fraud.   There will also be an opportunity to meet with exhibitors and network.

Thursday evening we’ll enjoy a nice dinner, raise MORBANPAC funds and hear about industry trends from Bill Cosgrove, CMB, owner of Union Home Mortgage.  On Friday, there will be an opportunity to continue networking during breakfast followed by golf at the beautiful Mountain Ridge golf course.

For those not golfing, there are many great things to do at the resort and I encourage you to take advantage of our group lodging rate and stay through the weekend at Crystal Mountain.  Check out for the complete conference schedule and registration information.   You can also connect to the Crystal Mountain website to reserve lodging from one of the many options they offer.  Golfers should register as soon as possible as we need to turn in our number of golfers in June.

I look forward to seeing you at the MMLA Annual Lending Conference at beautiful Crystal Mountain in spectacular northern Michigan!

Mid Chapter News

The Mid Chapter Update
Lisa Haun
Mid Chapter President
Transnation Title Agency, Inc.

Our Mid chapter has had a very busy spring thus far. In April, we lunched at the Board of Water & Light’s historic train depot. Bob Trezise, CEO of Lansing Economic Area Partnership (L.E.A.P.) updated us on the up and coming projects on the horizon here in Lansing. In addition, Dick Peffley, General Manager of BWL updated us on the energy advances that Lansing has in our near future. We are grateful to Bob and Dick for the enlightening information they took the time to share.

In May, our chapter hosted a legislative reception at Karoub & Associates. Representative Adam Zemke of Michigan’s 55th District, which encompasses Ann Arbor, filled us in on exactly what his daily job consists of. In particular, his role influencing education here in Michigan. Our state President Jim Wickham joined us and updated us on the importance of giving to MORBANPAC. We even has a visit from our beloved Murray Brown.

We are really looking forward to our annual baseball game outing at Cooley Law Stadium, home of the Lansing Lugnuts (our Class A Minor League baseball team). On June 21st we will gather for a social hour at The View, which overlooks the outfield. Diversified National Title has generously donated the use of the room and food for our event. Attendees can then go to the box office to purchase tickets if they choose to watch the game. Fun Times!

Look for information in the next newsletter about our annual golf outing on August 23rd at Royal Scot Golf Course!  Get the details here and register today!

We will host a talk and discussion about the serious issue of human trafficking on Thursday, May 24, 2018 @ Maggiano’s in Troy MI.  Cost per MMLA member will be $30 and $40 for non-MMLA members.  Registration opens at 11:30 am followed by the program at noon.  Special thanks to MSource Consulting & Training for being our sponsor for this event.
