President's Report

From the President's Desk

By:  Jim Wickham CMB
2018 MMLA President
Union Home Mortgage Company

The Board of MMLA would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the Conference Committee and our amazing group of presenters and speakers at this summer’s MMLA conference.  We had tremendous attendance and participation this year; the presentations were all extremely well attended.  Would also like to extend our appreciation to MBA for allowing Dave Motley (Current MBA Chairman) to attend and present on behalf of MBA.  We ended our event with an open conversation with past MBA Chairman, Bill Cosgrove, taking questions from the audience on a wide range of topics.  The immediate feedback as we were all either getting ready to golf or head back home on Friday was incredibly positive.  This year’s event was a change in format where we started the event with a social gathering Wednesday night, moved all the presentations to Thursday, and wrapped up with golf on Friday.

We also want to take a moment this month to say thank you and best wishes to Dave Stevens, CMB.   Dave took over as the CEO of MBA in 2011, after serving as the Federal Housing Administration commissioner in the Obama administration.  Dave shared during his keynote speech during the MBA Annual that he would be retiring.  Many of you may be aware that Dave has been battling cancer for over a year, with his cancer now in remission he is going to be focusing on his family and friends while making his health a bigger priority.  Dave stepped into this role during a very tumultuous time for MBA.  On the heels of a devastating housing crisis and in the middle of the largest regulatory overhaul our industry had seen in decades, Dave had to take the wheel.  During his tenure there was a lot to be accomplished and he did so with a sense of purpose and grace that our industry desperately needed.  Dave worked tirelessly with the Board of Directors to help the industry pull out of the housing crisis and mortgage meltdown, which was the underlying theme of his tenure as CEO.  As an industry we could not have asked for a better captain at the wheel as we sailed through the roughest of seas.  I will simply say thank you for a job well done along with best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement.

We now shift our attention to the upcoming compliance seminar, the leadership presentations for the mid-chapter, and the preparation for the installation of officer’s banquet.  We have a fair amount of events between now and the holidays; look forward to seeing many of you in the months ahead.

Legislative & MORBANPAC Committee News

Legislative and MORBANPAC Committee Update

by:  Todd Potter, CMB, Chairman
Level One Bank

Mid-term election season is in full swing.  Thank you to whoever invented the DVR so that I can fast forward thru the relentless number of political commercials!  By now, most of you have heard me mention how many positions are up for grabs for candidates representing our best interest in both Lansing and Washington DC.  All 14 Congressional and one US Senate seat in DC, every Michigan House and Senate, SOS, Attorney General and Governor are all up for grabs on November 6th.  If the citizens of Michigan come out to vote, like the record turnout of the August 7th Primary election (broke the previous record by over 500,000 voters) – our voice will be heard.

A couple updates out of Lansing:

  • HB 5811 - Signed into law by Governor Snyder on June 28th
    • Authorize remote performance of notarial acts.
  • SB 664, SB 996-999 - Passes Senate and referred to House Services Committee. Expected to be signed by Governor Snyder
    • Allows for the electronic notarization by notaries public. Authorizes in state notary statute the recognition of acts performed outside of the state. Revises authentication process for notarial acts performed outside of the state. Repeals the Uniform Recognition of Acknowledgements Act. Modifies requirements for the recording of electronic documents.
  • Transitional Licensing provisions in S.2155 signed by President Trump on May 24th,2018
    • Karoub has been working with DIFS to identify a timeline in which the State of Michigan will adopt the Transitional Licensing changes within the Safe Act. DIFS has indicated they will be able to adhere to the new rules by November 2019.

Lastly, I would like to thank each and everyone who contributed to MORBANPAC in 2018.  As of August 20, 2018, we have raised $22,866 towards our goal of $35,000, thanks in part to the $12,430 we raised during the annual conference.  To date, 52 individuals have donated at least $100 towards the 2018 campaign – thank you to your financial commitment to our industry and the consumers we represent.  For those that have not yet invested in the future of your industry, the 52 who have made and recognized the necessary commitment would appreciate your partnership.  The MMLA needs your support to properly sponsor and/or defend proposed legislation in Michigan.  With all the Bills being introduced and the change in the political landscape here in Michigan this fall, please consider a one-time donation to MORBANPAC.

Annual Lending Conference

The MMLA 2018 Lending Conference
by:  Karen Bondar, Chairperson
Arch Mortgage Insurance Co.

The MMLA Annual Lending Conference took place August 15 - 17 at Crystal Mountain Resort.  The conference kicked off with an outdoor dinner followed by a chairlift ride to the top of Crystal Mountain.  The view was Pure Michigan!

On the second day of the conference, the two-hundred attendees participated in business sessions with great speakers, networking time and opportunities to talk with exhibitors.  After dinner, MMLA President Jim Wickham CMB  and Union Home Mortgage CEO Bill Cosgrove CMB discussed current industry trends.

There was a successful rally to raise money for MORBANPAC at the conference, resulting in over $12,000 being raised.  We ended the conference with a golf scramble on the Mountain Ridge course where we finished just before a storm started ..…whew!

Thank you to the conference planning committee and the many companies that sponsored the conference.   The 2019 conference will be held at Crystal Mountain Resort August 14 – 16.

Mid Chapter News

The Mid Chapter Update
Lisa Haun
Mid Chapter President
Transnation Title Agency, Inc.

Several of the Mid-Chapter members were able to attend this year’s lending conference at Crystal Mountain.  I personally was very impressed by the facility and the speakers.  I will be looking forward to next year’s conference at the same location.

I am proud to say that our Annual Mid Chapter golf outing, which we collaborate with our local Women’s Council of Realtors, turned out very nicely.  On Thursday August 23, we gathered at the Royal Scot golf club here in Lansing for a sunny, well-attended outing.  We were able to collect money for MORBANPAC on two of our dedicated holes.  It was a nice ending to the summer!

On October 10, our chapter will host a luncheon at MSU’s Brody Hall.  The food is fantastic with various food stations covering the facility.  Our speaker is John Collins, Management Consultant and former MSU forensic scientist.  This is always a well-attended event at Brody!

We are also looking forward to our holiday event, which is always very special.  This year we will be in Lansing’s historic Old Town at the Old Town Marquee.  This event takes place on December 12 and is sure to be a great ending to a wonderful year.

Finally, I am so happy to let you know that our V.P. for 2019 is Melissa Cole of Greenstone FCS.  She will be a perfect President for 2020 and I am truly thankful to her for accepting this position.

Meet your MMLA Mid Chapter Leadership Team and Chapter Partners!

West Chapter News

West Chapter Update
Katrina Cole
2018 West Chapter President
Inlanta Mortgage Inc.

The West Chapter has had some great events these last few months.  In July we had a great breakfast event on the Lakeshore with a focus on personal branding and how to set yourself apart  while creating consistent marketing.  This was a well attended event from members around the state and also some of our local Realtors.  In August our Leadership Team decided we wanted to give back to our community!  We worked for several hours in the Wellhouse community garden spreading wood chips we were able to get donated from Integrity Tree Service, pulling weeds and re-supporting plants.

Our next event is "Do I Need a Coach" on September 13th from 9-10:30 AM at Sunnybrook Country Club.  Tim Scholten, veteran banker and leader, will be joining us from Columbus, OH to discuss how to know if you need a coach as well as how having a coach can change your success trajectory.   Tim will also provide insight into what you can do within the next month to improve their business by the end of the year!  You won't want to miss this one!!
