President's Report

From the President's Desk:

Don Precour, 2017 MMLA President
Fifth Third Bank

It’s hard to believe it is already March!! I have 2 full months now under my belt in my role as President of the MMLA!

Looking ahead, the Board of Directors will continue to work on the strategic plan, focusing on defining the policies and procedures that govern our association. We will also work to make sure our voice is heard on issues that affect our industry Lansing and D.C. The board is also committed to keeping members informed, educated and socially connected through all our state and local events.

The MMLA is one of the highest respected MBA associations in the country. It is always great to hear this from reps from around the country and from MBA staffers as well. To have such a successful association we need strong, supportive members. Thanks to all of you who continue to be members and active in our events!!

A special THANK YOU goes out to our annual Corporate Partners. Their support of the MMLA makes all we do possible. Please take a moment to click here to see the list of ALL the companies who are currently MMLA Corporate Partners.

New this year, we also have a Chapter Partnership program. This would be of benefit for companies who want to support the MMLA at the local level. For less than $100 a month, your company can be a chapter partner and get recognition for all of that chapter’s events all year long. Click here for all the details of this program.

Please contact me or Joanne Misuraca if you have any questions or need anything from the MMLA. I look forward to seeing you out in the golf events or the summer conference this year!

Legislative & MORBANPAC Committee News

Jim Wickham, CMB       Murray Brown
MMLA Vice President    Legislative Consultant
Union Home Mortgage   Karoub Associates

There is not a lot of current issues pending in Lansing that affect the mortgage industry.   A noteworthy item is that Rep. Jason Sheppard, R-Temperance, was swiftly relieved of a committee chairmanship less than an hour after voting against a proposal to cut the state's income tax.  Read about it by clicking here.

DIFS News: February 15  Michael Tyshaun Thurman 16-14609 Order of Denial of Mortgage Loan Originator License Application.  For a listing of all Director’s Orders visit,5269,7-303-20594_20598---,00.html

MORBANPAC is the non-partisan political action committee of the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association. It operates at the state level to support elected officials and candidates whose philosophies and positions support the real estate finance industry.

We had a great fundraising year in 2016, reaching our goal of $35,000.  We cannot rest...we need to continue raising funds year after year.  Please make your contribution to MORBANPAC and Do Your Part in 2017.  You can pay in a lump-sum or choose to be billed monthly. Close to ‘Sell Out’ once again!

The 2017 Sales Symposium is just a few days away. If you haven’t registered yet for this event, you still have a small window of time. We have a dynamic group of presenters that will have you motivated, inspired, encouraged, and enthused! Sponsorship opportunities are still available. What better place than a Sales Symposium can you get in front of 200+ loan originators, sales managers, and decision makers?

Our 2017 Best Practices Conference (FKA Compliance Conference) has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 16th. In this time of super regulation, how comfortable are you if the CFPB, the State, or one of the GSE’s knocked on your door? This full day conference will explore Sustaining Quality with Process Changes, the Final Impact of the TRID proposal, Fair Lending in the Trump Era, Alternative Finance Arrangements, CFPB and the new Administration, and much, much more. The BP Conference is a must for QC, Operations, Quality Assurance, and management personnel. But let’s not forget the sales staff…it all begins with you. Stay tuned as the Education Committee makes final preparations.

Membership and PR Committee

The committee has been very busy working on various projects for the MMLA.

First - the new website launched in January.  Check out if you have not done so yet. and let us know what you think!  Be sure to log in and "verify" your email address to ensure you will be able to receive membership emails in the future.

Next - the Forty Under Forty program.  Try as we did, we were unable to get 40 applications this year for this recognition program.  A testament to just how old the members of our association are.  So, we are changing gears and renaming this the "Rising Stars" recognition program.  We will be selecting members who were nominated this year and notifying them in the next couple of weeks.  An award presentation program/event will be planned.  Watch your email for more information this soon.

Last, but not least, we would like to introduce the Chapter Partnership Program.  As mentioned in Don's President's article, this program would be of benefit for companies who want to support the MMLA at the local level. For less than $100 a month, your company can be a chapter partner and get recognition for all of that chapter’s events all year long. Click here for all the details of this program.

Greeting from CMB central! What a wonderfully crazy time to be in the mortgage industry. Rates are inching up, consumer sentiment is good, our president is pushing regulatory relief, stock market is nearing 21000, job market is firm and our issues are now not enough inventory? It seems just like yesterday our industry was on life support? Boy do I love the mortgage industry!!

For those wondering what the benefits are of obtaining your CMB, the list is long and different for everyone. For me, the CMB designation represents knowledge, dedication and integrity, it represents a network of professional resources that I can utilize and more than anything a commitment to representing our craft at the highest level of advocacy.  I can state without any hesitation that obtaining my CMB has opened career opportunities for me, opportunities that have led to a career of responsibility and leadership! My certified mortgage designation has helped me to levels of success in my career that I could have imagined. Professionally the 2 best choices I have made is joining the MMLA and investing the time and money to get my CMB!

If you are interested in learning more about obtaining your Certified Mortgage Banker designation please contact me directly at 734-604-5684 or at or reach out to anyone that wears the CMB pin on their label! SE Chapter News

SE Chapter President's Corner

Thomas Johnston
SE Chapter President
First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation

I can’t believe how quickly the days are flying by. In no time we will be putting away the winter coats for the season (not just for the day). With the warm weather comes more opportunity. Opportunity to grow your business, attend some events and do some networking. We have several social and educational events lined up for everyone this year so check out the MMLA calendar soon and often.

Thanks to Mike Fontana for kicking us off with our 1st luncheon in February with over 60 attendees.

Maureen Townson said we can look forward to our 1st Social Committee event in April.   They are going to try some new ideas and we should see a repeat of a few favorites.

Dawn Burdick says “mark your calendars for June 8th” that’s the day we will be returning to Shepherd’s Hollow for our annual golf outing.

If you have any ideas or would like to volunteer for one of our events please contact our committee chairs directly. All of their contact info can be found on our new MMLA website.

SE MMLA Lunch & Learn
Mike Fontana, Chairperson
Guaranteed Rate, Inc.

On Monday, March 6, the SE MMLA Lunch & Learn will host another luncheon at Maggiano's in Troy, MI.  There is still time to register TODAY to get in on this event!  Our guest speaker is State Representative, Peter J. Lucido, R - Shelby Twp.  Peter is a very dynamic speaker and engaged member of our Michigan Legislature.  We will hear more about what is happening in Michigan and all the issues he is adressing in Lansing.  Needless to say, since the November elections, we have seen a positive run on Wall Street along with several executive orders from Washington geared towards transparency with the consumer.  Locally, we are addressing a massive sinkhole in Macomb County that will affect just about all residents in the County through their water bills and property taxes.  Continued infrastructure issues throughout the state will continue to come up and have to be dealt with on a case by case basis.  If you are a parent, we have a new Education Secretary that has caused a lot of commotion and those of you with kids will want to learn what Michigan will be doing to address the issue of education moving forward.

Here are a couple of pics from the February Luncheon Event on Dower'r Rights with Phillip Seaver of Seaver Title Company as speaker:
Phillip Seaver, Speaker                        Standing room only!!!

We are working on our next event.  If you would like to sponsor an upcoming, please contact me or go to this website page for more details.

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to me at or via cell phone at 248-224-5583.

SE Social Committee
Maureen Townson, Chairperson
Genworth Mortgage Insurance

The SE Chapter Social Committee met earlier this month to discuss fun activities to offer our members. On Thursday, April 27th we plan to have a fun networking event at World of Beer in Canton.  We wanted to offer people on the west side of our chapter an event closer to home. We plan to have speed networking, while offering appetizers and a chance to sample many different beers (and other drinks) at this new venue in Canton. Not familiar with World of Beer? click here to check it out!

We are happy to say; since the baseball game at Jimmy John’s Field was so well received last year, we will be bringing that back again this year in August. Dates for this event will be coming out soon! Details will be posted soon on the MMLA website.

If you are interested in helping out with our committee, reach out to Maureen Townson, Genworth Mortgage Insurance at (248) 245-2950 or email

Mid Chapter News

The Mid Chapter President's Corner

Cyndi Garza
MMLA Mid-Chapter President
Union Home Mortgage Company

The MMLA Mid Chapter hosted a wine tasting event in partnership with the Women’s Council of Realtors.  It was our initial networking event of the year.  This event took place at Dusty’s Wine Cellar in Okemos and capacity was 50.  The event was sold out.  We raised over $200 for MORBANPAC.  The cost to attend included four tickets to sample different types of wine along with enjoying heavy appetizers.

We are currently working on a March event to be held at another privately owned business.   Our focus this year is to host our events at local area businesses to support the business and also to have the business owner speak to us on their success stories.

Check back to the website calendar and watch your email for more details!
