President's Report

From the President's Desk
by:  Don Precour, 2017 MMLA President
Fifth Third Bank

Well it’s that time of the year!! Our Annual Lending Conference will take place on Sunday July 30 through Tuesday, August 1 at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt Pleasant. The theme this year is “Rolling with the Changes”. We continue to see challenges in our Industry and this conference is all about how we navigate through those changes. We selected a more centralize location for those members that may have difficulty taking the full three days, you can just come for Monday event and listen to all the speakers. The conference kicks off on Sunday with golf at 11 am at Pohlcat Golf Course, less than 10 minutes away from the resort. We did change it up this year by having golf on Sunday so we could have a few more speakers on Monday. We have a great line up of speakers including Ronald Robb (Motivational/Inspirational Speaker) to get us going in the morning, then with Rodrigo Lopez CMB MBA Chairman; Matt Tully, Essent discussing legislative updates, and finishing the afternoon with Gina Metrakas, Director of Urban Revitalization for Quicken Loans. There still are sponsorships available and this is a great way to have you company recognized at the conference. Lastly, we are having an auction, so if you can find something like Tiger Tickets, Red Wing tickets or other items to be auction, with all of the proceeds going to MORBANPAC, so our message is heard in the legislative arena.

Have a great Summer and I hope to see you at the conference!

Education Committee News

Education Committee Update
Audrey Acquisti, MMLA Education Consultant
MSource Training & Consulting

Happy Michigan Summer! Picnics, golf, swimming, and Up North are in full swing but, as usual, so is our national government. As has been the norm for several years, changes to our industry are taking place every day.

A survey was sent to our membership last month asking for your opinion on the events that we schedule to benefit our members. We read all of your surveys and seek to provide only those events, locations, topics, and speakers that are of interest to you. A special thank you to all who completed the survey. Click here to see the survey results.

Due to popular demand, the Education Committee has rescheduled our Compliance Seminar for this fall. Registration for the event now open. The event will take place at Crystal Gardens in Howell on September 13th from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. It is our hope that by having a half day event in lieu of a full day event, your work schedules will not be completely interrupted that day and will lessen the pressure of being out of the office. Click here for all the info and to register today!

The major topics we will be presenting will be HMDA, and Advertising & Marketing Rules. We are aware that many of you have attended seminars, webinars, and break-out sessions on the topic of HMDA and most of these sessions seem to go over the same information; what are the changes and when do they take place? Our plan is not to re-hash this information.

Our HMDA presentation will delve much deeper.

  • The MLO Personal Identification Number will now be included in HMDA reporting. ‘Can’ and ‘will’ this affect the MLO in the future?
  • Are points and fees reported based upon the Reg. Z definition and if so, is there a particular mortgage document that I must use to report from?
  • Data elements each have specific reporting requirements and can vary by channel.
  • Certain data elements are only reported if they are relied upon.
  • Underwriting procedures must be clear to avoid HMDA reporting violations.
  • N/A codes, blank fields, and zero are NOT the same.
  • How will the new anticipated loan application affect my HMDA reporting?

These are just a few of the in-depth topics that will be discussed.

Advertising & Marketing:  Howard Lax and Melissa Bridges from Bodman PLC always have new information on Advertising & Marketing Rules and how our regulators are viewing advertising methods. Howard and Melissa will not only speak on the rules but how do these rules affect your business, your staff, and your sales capabilities? In this age of technology there are so many different media’s where we can advertise. How do we monitor and control what is being advertised and is it truly considered advertising if we make a general post on a social media site?

We will be sure to include any additional compliance topics that burst on the scene in the next few months so don’t fail to register for this event! Wednesday, September 13th.   HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Cynthia Garza
Mid Chapter President

The MMLA Mid-Chapter recently had Andre Hutson speak at a luncheon at MSU Brody Hall.  He shared his experiences with growing up in Ohio, playing basketball for Tom Izzo at MSU, traveling Europe as a professional player and then his most recent business ventures.  He made it clear that although things may appear very successful to the outsiders, inside there are a lot of challenges and you must push through them to gain the success we all want.

We have a Lugnuts outing coming up on July 27th. Thank you to Diversified Title for sponsoring and providing access to a private suite.  The cost to attend is minimal due to the sponsorship. We are limited to 50 attendees and the space is filling quickly.  If it interested sign up right away-$10 all food and drink included.

We are also working hard on our joint golf outing with WCR on August 18th.   The corporate sponsorship opportunities are filled!  We have 24 teams registered and paid, along with an additional 14 signed but not paid yet.  We have more teams registered than we accommodate so we are taking the first 36 teams that are paid will be taken.  PAY NOW if you are signed up.

Who, What, Where...Social Newsletter

We hope you enjoy this social section of the MMLA  newsletter...the Who, What, Why....  There is so much going on in our industry and it is sometimes hard to keep track of job changes, promotions, new hires, etc.  The social aspect of our business plays a key role in MMLA membership.  Members who build relationships with other members and participate in local social and luncheon events get more value from their membership.

So, if you have an announcement to make - a new hire, a job change, office relocation, a honor or award you received, etc. - please email the information to mmla@mmla.net and you may see it in an upcoming issue of Who, What, Why....  We will even accept "just for fun" stuff like industry related jokes, cartoons and special "talents" or funny facts that people may not know about you...forward them as well.
