President's Report

From the President's Desk
by:  Don Precour, 2017 MMLA President
Fifth Third Bank

It has been an honor to serve as your 2017 President of the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association (MMLA). I would like to thank all the current State Board of Directors, Jim Wickham, CMB (Vice President), Todd Potter (Treasurer/Secretary), Marc Reneau (Immediate Past President), Pava Leyrer (Social Committee), Denya Macaluso (Education Committee), Tim Pascarella (Membership & PR Committee), Cynthia Garza (Mid-Michigan Chapter President), Tom Johnson (Southeast Michigan Chapter President), Mario Castillo (West Michigan Chapter President), Joanne Misuraca (Executive Director), Trinity Lancione (Communication & Events Manager), and Audrey Acquisti (Education Consultant).

This board has been very active with open opinions that included long discussions which are driving us through a journey with our Strategic Plan. As I mentioned last year, we would be going through a 3 year process in executing this plan. We have made many strides with our Strategic Plan. One of our first accomplishments was updating our By-Laws which were completed at the end of last year. We then defined our leadership roles and responsibilities for the board of directors including individual roles. We started to establish and updated our policies and procedures in many areas to ensure continued viability of the MMLA. There is still more work to be done in this area. We have implemented guidelines for Event planning for each Chapter for next year. Trinity’s leadership will assist the chapter Presidents, in establishing a time table for each event, allowing better planning and consistency with all chapters.  Finally, we are streamlining the budget process shifting the responsibility from the Chapter Presidents to Joanne and Trinity allowing the presidents to focus on building interest, attendance, sponsorships and overall awareness for the MMLA.

We still have a lot of work left to do and through Jim’s leadership and with the help of the new board, they will continue on the path of executing our Strategic Plan. I know Jim will be speaking shortly to you on our recently rolled out new Partnership/Sponsorship opportunities.   Finally, this has been a very exciting time for the MMLA and I am so proud to have served with such dedicated professionals. I am very confident that the new board will continue to be advocates of promoting and strengthening the mortgage industry.

The Mid Chapter Upcoming Events
Cynthia Garza
Mid Chapter President
Union Home Mortgage Company

I wanted to take a moment to give thanks to the committee with the mid chapter and all the support they provided this year in finding good speakers, good topics and covering the events when I was out of town and not able to attend.  We had a great year with trying to host the events at local venues and giving our members an opportunity to visit different places of business within our community.  We didn’t always stay on the topic of mortgages but had a great time networking.

We started the year with a wine tasting event at Dusty’s in Okemos to launch 2017.  In April we had a great breakfast hosted by Aaron Matthews, the owner of Creole.  He shared his story of success with being a local attorney and opening several restaurants and what his vision for the future holds.  We then went onto host an event at MSU with Andre Hutson sharing his story of persistence to take him through college basketball onto owning several businesses in the area.  Diversified Title sponsored a local Lugnut baseball game for us which included a great game, great friends along with dinner and drinks.  We can’t forget about the fantastic golf outing that was put on together with WCR which brought us our highest grossing revenue event for the year.  In November hosted a Crime Stoppers event alongside the Michigan State Police Department to show us ways to become more safe and aware.  This will be followed up with a practice shooting range.  We will finish the year off with a happy hour holiday party at the University Club.  Thanks again for the great year, the great events and all the support.

Come and join us for our Holiday Happy Hour!
Cocktails, appetizers, live music, raffles, great networking.  Invite your staff and customers to this great holiday gathering!

Event proceeds will be donated to the Ingham County Animal Shelter!

SE Chapter News

SE Chapter President's Corner
Thomas Johnston
SE Chapter President
First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation

Greetings!  It’s hard to believe we are only a month away from the end of the year. What a fantastic year it has been so far! We started the year with our largest chapter luncheon in a few years with over 60 attendees. We had some great social events, World of Beers networking event and Jimmy Johns Stadium Baseball game. For those of you who made it out to the golf outing, what a beautiful day to host our sold out event. Unlike my golf swing the day couldn’t have been more perfect. Only a couple more events for the SE Chapter this year. Our “How to recruit, train and retain millennials” luncheon this month and our SE Chapter holiday party at the Detroit Zoo in December.

Thank you to all the companies that supported our events through sponsorship. Thank you Allison Johnston for helping gather that support.   Thank you to all the SE Chapter committee leaders, Paula Rosneck, Maureen Townson, Mike Fontana and Dawn Burdick for doing an outstanding job with our events this year.

You don’t realize how much work goes in to organizing and planning these events until you’re a part of it. You have to appreciate the hard work our volunteers and committee leaders put into them. I know if it was left up to me alone there is no way any of it would have happened.

See you at the next event!
