President's Report

From the President's Desk

By:  Deborah Herdman
2021 MMLA President
Huntington National Bank

Spring is in the air! Just as the weather is transitioning, we are in the process of our own transition professionally and personally. Our state is slowly re-opening, cases are starting to diminish, more and more vaccines are being distributed daily, and the governor has released her timeline to reduce remaining restrictions.  As we see the light at the end of this tunnel, many are anxious to get out there and socialize!

There are several reasons our colleagues join MMLA, among the top reason is the networking and the social events.  The social networking is important as we are connected to others within the industry, strengthen our business connections, gain more knowledge, best practices, and support.  The MMLA will continue to follow all COVID guidance, and we are optimistic about hosting some upcoming in person events this year.  We are looking forward to hosting a “Welcome Back” outdoor patio happy hour once the weather improves.  We also have two golf events planned in June (registration is currently open), and we are finalizing the plans for the Annual Conference in Traverse City August 11th – 13th, so make sure to save the date!   See articles about each of these events in this newsletter.

It sure has been an interesting year, and we are excited we will be able to come back together.  We do hope you will be able to join us, and we look forward to seeing you this summer!

Success Mortgage Partners, Inc.

The Michigan legislature has been focused on budget and budget related issues.  The Republican majority is at odds with the Democratic leadership as too how ot allocate federdal funds coming to our state in the form of COVID relief.   A large chunk of these funds will be earmarked for housing and enhancing affordable housing and credit access.  Watch for more news coming on this.  We are starting ot see some housing bills and expect more to come.  Click here to read the latest report from our Lobbying Firm, Karoub Associates.

2021 MORBANPAC Chair
MSU Federal Credit Union

We are approaching the halfway point of 2021, which just seems unbelievable, doesn’t it?!  However, there is a lot work being done at the state level to protect not only industry workers but our homeowners, landlords and tenants as COVID-19 continues to impact so many Michiganders.

If you did not have the opportunity to hear Pete Mills from MBA as well as Tabitha Zimny, our lobbyist from Karoub on our April 28th webinar, here a just a few key initiatives we are working on:

  • Short Term housing bills
  • First Time homebuyer bill
  • Attainable housing (affordability initiatives)
  • Extension of the MI Mortgage Relief Partnership
  • Mortgage Officer Licensing – remote work

We have the awesome opportunity to have our voices heard through MORBANPAC!    It’s never too late to donate.   As always, we accept any level of donation, whatever it is you feel you can afford and want to contribute is welcomed and very much appreciated.

To donate, join the MORBANPAC committee, or learn more, please visit www.MMLA.net and click on MORBANPAC.

The MMLA has been participating with DIFS in a work group focusing on policies and procedures for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).  We are looking for feedback on what companies are already doing to address to these issues.

On behalf of DIFS, we are asking you to please take a few moments to complete this survey.  This is an anonymous survey - so please don't hesitate to respond.  https://www.esurveyspro.com/Survey.aspx?id=2c85cad9-61bd-417c-b00b-9daaa81aeaf3

The purpose of this survey is to assist the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Workgroup in developing best practices that foster DEI in the insurance and financial service industries. This voluntary and anonymous survey will help the workgroup identify current practices, policies, products, or services that promote DEI and identify any challenges or obstacles that workgroup members are facing. The DEI workgroup recognizes the sensitive nature and complex history relating to DEI concerns within the insurance and financial industries. References made in your responses that identify your organization will also remain anonymous. Please provide thorough and complete responses.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

  QM - The Final Ruling?!!

The CFPB has published a final rule delaying the mandatory compliance date of the final QM rule until 10/1/22. www.consumerfinance.gov/rules-policy/final-rules/qualified-mortgage-definition-under-truth-lending-act-regulation-z-general-qm-loan-definition-delay-mandatory-compliance-date/.

However, the Bureau notes that "policies, agreements, or legislation created by parties other than the Bureau—including the PSPAs—may limit the impact of the mandatory compliance date delay, the Bureau is unable to predict how such agreements or restrictions might change in the future."

So in short: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac still appear to be requiring new QM after July 1st on the majority of loans eligible for purchase. Are you prepared for which loans need to qualify for the revised QM rule, when you need to sell your “old” QM loans, and what additional changes can be expected? Join us in pursuit of answers on May 11 @ 4 pm.

This webinar is great for all lenders and operations personnel.  Make sure you know the latest details and are compliant!

Date:  May 11, 2021
Time:  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Location:  Via Zoom Webinar  (this will be recorded so you can watch afterwards)
Cost:  FREE TO MMLA MEMBERS, $20 for non-Members

Mid Chapter MMLA President's Corner
Tina Manshum
2021 Mid Chapter President
Michigan First Mortgage

The Mid-Chapter has has been working with the local WCR group to plan an "in-person" social event.  With pandemic limitations still in place, it is difficult to find a location to accomodate a group at this time.  For this reason, we have postponed this event until the fall.  Please watch for more info coming later this summer about this.

Speaking of summer - we are still planning on our Annual Golf Outing at Brookshire to be held August.  We are also hoping to hold a social event at a Lugnuts game - shoudl be a busy summer!  More to come on this.  If you want to be part of the planning committee, please contact me - we would love to have you on our team.

SE Golf Committee
Nathan Motta, Chair
Success Mortgage Partners

The Southeast Chapter is looking forward to hosting our 2021 Golf Outing Wednesday, June 2nd at Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center in Plymouth, Michigan. The change of location this year presents some new views and additional flexibility for sponsors to participate at the hole and allows for more interaction with golfers.  Additionally, we have a full dinner scheduled at a covered pavilion outdoors with the ability to close off for protection from weather conditions.

A few great sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are still available to promote your company and support the MMLA.  Please reach out to Nate via email at [email protected] to ask any questions or volunteer for the event.

We believe this will be a great event to see large groups of fellow mortgage industry professional in person in a safe environment!

Hello and Happy Spring!   The leadership team met virtually on March 4th and April 1st to discuss a possible in person Happy Hour event to be held in Saugatuck mid-May.  However, with the COVID numbers still growing and Michigan being in the national news as the new “hotspot”, we thought we would postpone this event unit the fall.  Please stay tuned for more details and keep your fingers crossed that COVID will soon be a thing of the past.

We do have our annual golf outing scheduled for Thursday June 10th at Thornapple Point.  Click here and register today.  While you’re there, checkout the sponsorship opportunities and please consider sponsoring the event.  The golf outing is always a well-attended event and I think this year we are going to surpass all previous outings with a record number of golfers.  So, register and sponsor today!
