MMLA Annual Award Winners!

The MMLA announced the recipients of its annual awards last week at the Lending Conference.  The first award to be highlighted here is the James T. Barnes Memorial Award. This award was established in 1979 to recognize outstanding contributions to the mortgage banking industry.  Commonly referred to as the “Mortgage Industry Lifetime Achievement Award”. It is awarded annually to the person whose career reflects high ethical standards with a deep commitment to mortgage banking and the MMLA.

This year's award recipient is Mark Jones of Amerifirst Mortgage!  Mark Jones co-founded Amerifirst Home Mortgage with Dave Gahm in 1983, and the company has grown from an individual location in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to over 80 full-service locations and 750 personnel nationwide.

Mark is an advocate for affordable homeownership with a mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Amerifirst is the No. 1 USDA lender, the No. 3 FHA lender in Michigan.

In 2016, Mark received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for Michigan and Northwest Ohio. Mark currently serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). He previously served as co-chair of MBA’s Independent Mortgage Bankers Executive Council.

Mark also serves on the board as Public Policy Committee Chair at Southwest Michigan First and serves as Chair of Southwest Michigan First PAC.

As Mark ascends to the Vice-Chair role with the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), we felt it was a fitting time to present Mark with this much deserved award.

The awards will be presented at the Annual Banquet on Nov 3 @ Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Mi.  Stay tuned for more info about other award winners and this event!

The 2022 Winners have been announced!  They are:

Corrine Rockoff, Maddin Hauser

Sara Fierk, Titleocity

Donielle Heart, First State Bank

DIFS is Reminding Michiganders of Available Housing Assistance Programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 2, 2022

(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers of options that may be available to support homeowners who are having difficulty making payments.

“If you are experiencing financial hardship and you are concerned about your housing, there are resources available to help you,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Many mortgage companies have programs to help people avoid foreclosure, so reach out right away if you are worried about falling behind on your payments. Your lender or servicer will look at your situation and help you consider the options that may be available to you.”

Foreclosure restrictions placed on mortgage servicers by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) have expired, but there may be other options for consumers. It is important to:

Pay if you can: If you can pay your mortgage as agreed, you should continue to do so.

Don’t wait: If you are having trouble paying your mortgage, contact the company you make your payments to right away. You should find its contact information on the statements you receive on your mortgage loan.

It may not be too late: Even if you have missed one or more mortgage payments, and have not contacted your mortgage company, it may not be too late. Contact the company you make your payments to today to ask for assistance.

In addition, if you are concerned about your housing situation, these programs may be able to help:

You can also contact a MSHDA approved agency for other free assistance. Consumers who have questions or disputes that cannot be directly resolved with their financial institutions can contact DIFS Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-999-6442 or file a complaint online at Michigan.gov/DIFScomplaints
